Join us for a quick lesson in ceiling, truss and insulation design. We subscribe to the school of thought which suggests that the more the customer knows the better the communication can be. Why? Because the supplier and customer then speaks the same language. Today we’re looking at the different types of ceiling and truss designs available and how different insulation complements this.

 

Some of the types of ceiling designs and finishing effects available include IsoBoard, IsoPine, cncealed, insulated or exposed. It can often seem overwhelming when you think of having to speak to and understand a building contractor. However, when broken down, the terms you need to know aren’t that complicated at all.

 

Let’s dig a little deeper (or build a little higher):

 

Concealed ceilings ensure that the trusses are hidden. Exposed ceilings are internal areas which have the roof trusses visible. Exposed ceilings give more volume to the room as the ceiling is much higher than a standard flat ceiling. What’s interesting is that you do still require a ceiling but it’s installed above the roof truss with some form of insulation. How do you decide on the insulation?  Depending on the covering type and ceiling used.

Some options for exposed ceilings can be as follows:

- Plaster board: this has a smooth finish which is then painted - insulation is required above it.

- Tongue and groove timber: this is installed in strips which link together. You can choose to paint or stain them and insulation is required.

- IsoBoard: this is a rigid bulk thermal insulator board.

- IsoPine: this has 100 mm centre grooves that route down the length of each board to look like the tongue and groove wood effect.
