Five benefits of using LED lamps instead of conventional lighting image

LED (Light Emitting Diodes) is one of the most exciting technological advancements in the lighting industry. These small, solid light bulbs are extremely energy efficient, long lasting, durable and can be used for a wide variety of applications such as: residential lighting, architectural lighting, industrial automation and control, and transportation. To be able to better compare LED lamps to conventional lighting, we have listed five of the top benefits of using LEDs.

1.    Long life

The number one benefit of LED lamps is their impressive lifespan. These lamps have an operational lifetime expectation of up to 100 000 hours – 11 years of continuous operation. Instead of burning out like other standard light fittings, LEDs start to emit lower output levels over a very long period of time and become less bright. Therefore, a great amount of effort, energy and money can be saved on maintenance work, including purchasing, stocking and changing conventional light bulbs.

2.    Energy efficiency

LEDs are today’s most efficient way of lighting because about 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light, while only 20% is lost and converted to other forms of energy. If this doesn’t sound impressing enough, compare it to a traditional light bulb that operates at 20% energy efficiency, losing 80% of the electricity. The effects of large scale LED use in terms of urban infrastructure, such as cities, railroads and airports, will not only lead to massive savings, but will also save great amounts of time and effort.

3.    Environmental benefits

Conventional fluorescent light bulbs contain materials like mercury that are harmful to the environment, while LED lamps are free of any toxic chemicals, are 100% recyclable, and will help you reduce your carbon footprint by up to a third. As mentioned above, the biggest advantage of LEDs is their operational lifetime span, and environmentally this means that a single LED bulb can save the materials and production of 25 incandescent light bulbs – this is a big step towards a greener future!

4.    Durability

LEDs are built with sturdy components that can withstand very tough conditions – making them extremely durable. They are great for outdoor lighting, construction sites and manufacturing sites, as they are resistant to vibrations and shock and can withstand exposure to rough conditions or extreme weather. This factor, in addition to the fact that LEDs last up to five times longer than traditional lighting, results in extremely reduced lighting maintenance.

5.    Safety

Another very important benefit of LEDs is their improved safety. Because LED bulbs generate almost no heat, compared to conventional lighting that expel 90% of their generated energy via heat, they can be left on for hours without running the risk of fires or personal injury.

Unfortunately, there are lots of different LED lighting brands on the market and some are very poor quality. Therefore, we would recommend using a professional electrician for your installation to ensure the highest standards are met.
